Stephen J. Ubl
President and CEO, AdvaMed

Stephen J. Ubl is president and CEO of AdvaMed, the world's largest medical technology association. AdvaMed has more than 1,600 member companies, subsidiaries and divisions producing medical devices, diagnostic products and medical information systems. The Association’s membership has risen 55 percent over the past five years, with 83 companies joining in 2007 alone.

Ubl is recognized as a top health care advocate and policy expert across multiple health policy sectors, having successfully worked with medical technology manufacturers, hospitals, patient groups, physicians and public and private payers. His lobbying accomplishments include passing landmark reforms related to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration product review process and Medicare's coverage and reimbursement of medical technologies. In May 2007, Ubl was named a top association lobbyist in The Hill newspaper’s annual list of top lobbyists.

He first joined AdvaMed in 1998 as executive vice president of federal government relations. He left the organization in 2004 to open his own healthcare consulting firm, which served clients including Fortune 500 healthcare companies and leading investment banks. In July 2005, Ubl was chosen to lead AdvaMed as its president and CEO.

Prior to AdvaMed, Ubl was vice president of legislation for the Federation of American Hospitals. Ubl began his Washington career on Capitol Hill, where he worked for U.S. Senator Charles E. Grassley (R-IA.).

Ubl holds a degree in Political Science from St. Cloud State University, St.Cloud, MN.

José E. Almeida

José (Joe) E. Almeida is Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Covidien plc.

He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Covidien since March 2012 and as the President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director since July 2011.

Prior to being appointed to his current position, Almeida was President of the Medical Devices organization at Covidien. In this position, he oversaw several businesses accounting for approximately two-thirds of the Company’s total annual revenues and about three-quarters of its operating profit.

Previously, Almeida held leadership positions at Covidien, Greatbatch Technologies, Inc., American Home Products’ Acufex Microsurgical division and Johnson & Johnson’s Professional Products division. He began his career as a Management Consultant at Andersen Consulting (Accenture).

A native of Brazil, Almeida received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Escola de Engenharia Maua in São Paulo. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of State Street Corporation, the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) and Partners in Health, and he is a member of Business Roundtable.

Lester B. Knight is a Founding Partner and Co-Chairman of RoundTable Healthcare Partners, a private equity firm focused exclusively on the health care industry. Since its inception in 2001, RoundTable has raised five funds and manages $1.9 billion of committed capital.

Mr. Knight has almost 35 years of health care experience.  He served as Vice Chairman of Cardinal Health following the merger of Allegiance Corporation and Cardinal in 1999. Prior to the merger, Mr. Knight was Chairman of the Board and CEO of Allegiance, a multibillion-dollar spin-off in 1996 from Baxter International, Inc.  Mr. Knight spent 16 years at Baxter where he was Executive Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors.

Mr. Knight was elected Chairman of the Board of Aon Corporation in 2008 having served on the board since 1999.  He also chairs the Governance/Nominating and Executive Committees.

Mr. Knight also serves on the Northwestern University Board of Trustees having been elected in June 1998. As a trustee he serves on the Technology Transfer and Business Development, Medical Affairs, and the Executive Committees.

Additionally, Mr. Knight holds other board positions at NorthShore University HealthSystem, Junior Achievement of Chicago and the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed). He is a member of The Economic Club of Chicago, the Civic Committee of The Commercial Club of Chicago, and a Trustee of the Knight Family Foundation.

Mr. Knight holds a Bachelor’s degree (’80) in Industrial Engineering from Cornell University and Master’s degree (’81) in Business from the Cornell Johnson School of Management.
